The Under the Sun brand of dog food is produced and manufactured by Canidae, one of the highest quality pet food brands on the market. This brand features a number of products made with farm-fresh fruits and vegetables as well as quality proteins like chicken, lamb, and fish. They offer a variety of grain-free and potato-free options as well as original formulas made with fresh chicken. This brand offers a few different flavors for canned food as well, all of which are grain-free. They are similar to Canidae in that both brands use quality ingredients, but what sets this brand apart from the Canidae brand of food is the price – they are designed to be a quality pet food brand that is made available at affordable prices.

When you visit their website you will find a simple design and a minimal amount of information about the brand and its product offerings. The website does provide an overview of ingredients, noting that most recipes are made with a single source of animal protein. They design their recipes around “carefully chosen ingredients” to ensure that each recipe provides not only quality nutrition, but also guarantees easy digestion. While most of their products are grain-free, the two original formulas (one for adults and one for puppies) are made with whole grains – these recipes are ideal for dogs that do not suffer from food allergies or sensitivities. Another point worth mentioning is that all of their products are pork-free because pork is a common allergen.

They design their products in a way that ensures that pet parents like you will feel good about offering their pets quality nutrition. This brand uses a variety of farm-fresh fruits and veggies like chickpeas, tomatoes, pumpkin, blueberries, and zucchini as well as healthy herbs and spices to load up their products with quality nutrition as well as natural flavor. All of their products are free from corn, wheat and soy ingredients, plus they don’t use any chicken by-product meal. They also provide a transition guide for pet parents to help them make their dog’s switch to their products as smooth and seamless as possible.

Under the Sun Recalls 2024:

This brand of food is produced by the Canidae Company and Canidae’s products are manufactured by Diamond Pet Foods. Canidae is a company known for the quality and safety of its products, an assumption which carries over to this Brand. While this brand still utilizes quality ingredients, it is a more affordable brand than Canidae and one that offers a more limited selection of products. Because they are still a fairly new brand, it has not been affected by any recalls to date. The Canidae Company as a whole only has one recall to its name – here are the details:

  • In In May 2012, Diamond Pet Foods issued a mandatory recall of all dog food products manufactured at their Gaston, South Carolina facility due to potential salmonella contamination.

They use high-quality proteins in their recipes and many of them are grain-free, so they can be a little more expensive than traditional kibbles. Compared to many natural pet food brands, however, they are still fairly affordable. A 5-pound bag of Original Adult or Original Puppy dry food costs about $10 while a 4-pound bag of grain-free dry food costs about the same. Cans of wet food cost between $2.25 and $3.25, depending on the recipe. To save money on this brand, look for Under the Sun dog food coupons online.

They do not offer a very large selection of products, but the recipes they do offer are formulated with the greatest care. Under the Sun Original Adult Food with Chicken Review:

This Original Adult Food with Chicken formula is one of the brand’s two original recipes made with whole grains. While chicken meal is the primary ingredient, this recipe is fortified with whole grains like brown rice, oatmeal, millet, and milo (another name for sorghum). Though this recipe does contain grains, it is still gluten-free and it doesn’t contain any corn, wheat, or soy ingredients. According to the brand website, this recipe provides the best nutrition possible “along with a great taste your dog will love”. It is loaded with simple, high-quality ingredients and designed to nourish your dog’s whole body for long-lasting health and wellness.

As promised, the first ingredient in this recipe is chicken-based – it is chicken meal. Before you get worried about the word “meal” here, consider the fact that meat meals are simple fresh meats which have been cooked to remove moisture. Because fresh meats contain up to 80% moisture by volume, the actual volume of protein they provide after cooking could be much lower. With an ingredient like chicken meal, however, you don’t have to worry about the volume changing much – chicken meal is a highly concentrated animal protein. Not only does this recipe start with chicken meal as the first ingredient, but fresh chicken appears further down the list and your dog will get some supplementary plant protein from sun-cured alfalfa, flaxseed, and certain vegetables. Though chicken meal is the first ingredient in this recipe, the total crude protein content is only 35% which is a little on the low side for a dry food product.

After the chicken meal comes six carbohydrate-based ingredients – milo, brown rice, oatmeal, millet, rice bran, and sun-cured alfalfa. As it has already been mentioned, these ingredients are naturally gluten-free, though they are not grain-free. Milo is simply another name for sorghum and it is a whole grain like the brown rice, oatmeal, and millet. Each of these ingredients provides your dog with slow-burning energy as well as dietary fiber and key vitamins and minerals. Your dog will also get some supplementary fiber from the flaxseed and from the fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs that appear at the end of the list.

The remaining ingredients in this Original Adult Food with Chicken formula consist of fats, flavors, and supplements. The main source of fat in this recipe is chicken fat. While this may not sound like an appetizing ingredient to you, it is a highly concentrated source of energy for your dog and animal-based fats are always more biologically valuable than plant-based fats. Flaxseed is a plant-based fat that provides some supplementary fiber and protein, though its main reason for inclusion is to help balance the omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acid content of this recipe. In terms of supplements, you will find a number of chelated minerals in addition to vitamin supplements. Chelated minerals have been chemically bound to protein molecules which makes them easier for your dog’s body to digest and absorb. The fresh fruits and vegetables at the end of the list also provide natural sources for key vitamins and minerals.

Overall, this Original Adult Food with Chicken formula has a guaranteed analysis as follows:

  • Crude Protein (Min) – 35%
  • Crude Fat (Min) – 10%
  • Crude Fiber (Max) – 4%
  • Moisture (Max) – 10%
  • Calorie Content – 352 kcal/cup

Bottom Line:

Overall, thisBrand appears to offer both quality and value for dog owners. As a Canidae-owned brand, you can believe what you read on the brand website when it comes to the proclaimed quality of their ingredients. They may not offer as much variety as other food brands, but what this brand does it does well. All of Under the Sun’s products are made with a single animal protein and are supplemented with farm-fresh ingredients for natural flavor and nutrition – this brand also avoids low-quality fillers like corn, wheat and soy ingredients. All in all, if you are looking for a quality food brand that won’t break the bank, they are a good option to consider.
