Overall Solid Gold Cat Food Review
The Solid Gold pet food company produces both dry food and wet food formulas with recipes catering to the nutritional needs of kittens, active adults, and mature cats. There are nine dry food formulas and six wet food formulas to choose from, with each one made with a source of quality animal protein as the first ingredient. Solid Gold cat foods are designed to meet a variety of special needs for cats with food allergies, cats that need to lose weight, and cats that have started to slow down in their old age. No matter what life stage your cat is in and no matter what his nutritional needs may be, there is a Solid Gold product out there for
him.
All of Solid Gold’s cat food formulas are formulated and produced in keeping with the company’s policy of GoldSource Core Nutrition. Some of the elements included in this core nutrition policy include eggs, superfoods, omega fatty acids, probiotics and prebiotic fiber, and a number of essential vitamin and mineral supplements plus essential fatty acids. Many Solid Gold products are made with healthy whole grains like brown rice, oatmeal, and cracked pearled barley, though there are a number of grain-free and gluten-free formulas available as well. Solid Gold’s products also contain healthy monounsaturated fats like salmon oil, sesame oil, and canola oil to support your cat’s skin and coat health. Additionally, every Solid Gold product is free from corn, wheat and soy ingredients plus there are no artificial preservatives or flavors used at all.
Given all of the health claims made on the Solid Gold website, you are led to believe that this is a very high-quality cat food brand. In order to judge the quality of the products for yourself, however, you need to perform an analysis of ingredients used in Solid Gold products. A quick review of Solid Gold dry cat food formulas reveals that fresh meat is the first ingredient in all of their products. Many products also contain a second source of protein like chicken meal as the next ingredient. In addition to high-quality proteins, Solid Gold dry cat food products are also made with healthy whole grains or gluten-free carbohydrates like potatoes, peas, chickpeas, and tapioca. Many of Solid Gold’s products also contain fresh fruits and vegetables as supplementary sources of nutrition.
In reviewing the ingredients for Solid Gold’s wet cat food products it becomes clear that all but one of their formulas is both gluten- and grain-free. Each of the six wet food formulas is made with a quality source of animal protein as the first main ingredient and many of them contain a second source of animal protein as the next ingredient. These wet food formulas are moistened with water and bound with tapioca starch, a gluten-free alternative to wheat flour. Each wet food recipe is formulated to meet the nutritional needs of cats in all live stages and they are full of irresistible natural flavor your cat is sure to love. All in all, a review of Solid Gold’s products reveals that the claims they make on their website in regard to the quality of their products are well founded in nutritional truths.
Individual Recipe Review (Dry) Solid Gold Katz-N-Flocken with Lamb
The Solid Gold Katz-n-Flocken dry food formula is formulated to meet the nutritional needs of cats and kittens with moderate activity levels. This dry food formula is described as, “a feast of the finest, most tender grass-fed New Zealand lamb (a high-density protein), plus delicious chicken meal, whole grain brown rice for a healthy digestive system, and taurine, an essential amino acid that supports your kitty’s overall body function”. In short, this is a high-quality formula loaded with real animal protein, healthy whole grains, and essential nutrients. As an added bonus, this formula is free from meat by-product meals as well as corn, wheat, soy, sugar, and artificial flavors and preservatives.

I have a cat that must be on grain free cat food and she eats this food very well!
The ingredients list for this Solid Gold Katz-n-Flocken dry food formula is fairly short compared to many commercial cat food formulas. The first ingredient is indeed lamb and it is followed up by chicken meal. In addition to being a quality source of animal protein, lamb is also rich in zinc, iron, magnesium, and vitamin B-12. One thing worth noting about fresh lamb is that it may contain as much as 80% moisture – when the product is cooked down the actual volume of protein in this ingredient will be much lower. That is why it is good to see a quality meat meal like chicken meal next on the list. Chicken meal has been cooked down to a moisture level around 10% already so it is up to 3 times more concentrated as a source of protein than fresh meats like lamb.
After the lamb and chicken meal comes peas, brown rice, and pea protein. Both peas and brown rice are digestible sources of gluten- and grain-free carbohydrates. In addition to providing your cat with dietary fiber, peas also contain vitamins A, B, C, and K – they also contain some vegetarian protein. Brown rice is a whole grain that is rich in fiber as well as phosphorus, manganese, niacin, vitamin E, and vitamin B6. Cats do not have a biological requirement for carbohydrate in their diet so these sources are likely included for their dietary fiber and nutritional value. The only somewhat questionable ingredient of the three is pea protein. Because fresh peas are already listed, pea protein is a “split ingredient” and it may be included in this formula as a means of increasing the protein content of the product without adding more meat. It is somewhat troubling to see this ingredient so high on the ingredients list but there are plenty of animal protein sources here, so it may not be an issue.
Following the first five ingredients on the list for this Solid Gold Katz-n-Flocken dry food formula you will see ocean fish meal, pearled barley, canola oil, and dried eggs. Both ocean fish meal and dried eggs are valuable sources of animal protein. Ocean fish meal is another highly concentrated protein source and it also contains valuable omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. Canola oil is another source of fat for your cat, particularly for omega-3 fatty acids. Unfortunately, plant-based fats are less biologically valuable for your cat than animal fats – it is good to see that salmon oil is also included further down the ingredients list, but so is sesame oil and almond oil. Pearled barley is another source of whole-grain carbohydrate. It is easily digestible for your cat as long as it is cooked properly but it does contain gluten which could be a problem for cats with food sensitivities.
Other ingredients worth noting in this Solid Gold Katz-n-Flocken dry food formula include flaxseed, fresh fruits and vegetables, chelated minerals, and dried fermentation products. Flaxseed is a plant-based ingredient that provides a blend of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, plus some dietary fiber. The fresh fruits and vegetables included in this recipe help to fill out the nutrient profile for this product, providing both vitamins and minerals as well as valuable antioxidants. Chelated minerals are a very valuable addition to this product because they have been chemically bonded to protein molecules, making them easier for your cat’s body to digest and absorb. The dried fermentation products are included as probiotics to help improve your cat’s digestion.
Overall, this Solid Gold Katz-n-Flocken dry food formula has a guaranteed analysis as follows:
- Crude Protein (Min) – 34%
- Crude Fat (Min) – 12%
- Crude Fiber (Max) – 3%
- Moisture (Max) – 10%
- Calorie Content – 375 kcal/cup
This formula meets the AAFCO nutritional requirements for cats and kittens with moderate activity levels. This dry food formula contains about 375 calories per cup which is about average for a commercial cat food formula. The crude fat content could be a little higher but it is well within the recommended range and there is plenty of crude protein. All in all, this Solid Gold Katz-n-Flocken dry food formula provides good nutritional value for adult cats and kittens.
Final Thoughts
Overall, this Solid Gold Katz-n-Flocken dry food formula seems to be an excellent source of quality nutrition for your cat. Not only is it made with multiple sources of quality animal protein, but it contains animal-based fats as well. There are a few ingredients which some cat owners might consider questionable, but they are unlikely to be present in sufficient quantities to cause a problem. This dry cat food is formulated to meet the nutritional needs for both kittens and active adult cats, just be sure to follow the feeding recommendations to find the right feeding amount for your cat based on his weight.
I worry about giving my kitty coconut milk. Many informational sites say coconut milk and other milks are not good for cats . I am confused since it is used in some of you’re recipes and I really would like to try them! If you could explain this , it would be appreciated.
