Quick Guide
The Evolve pet food brand is produced by Sunshine Mills, a company that has been producing pet foods since 1960. When you visit their website, you will see their tagline, “Superior pet food made with real meat” and that is the nutritional philosophy they follow in producing all of their pet foods. This company is fairly small compared to many pet food manufacturers, only offering a handful of recipe options for both dry food and wet food, but the recipes they do offer seem to be of sound nutritional quality. Each recipe is formulated with an emphasis on quality animal proteins with digestible carbohydrates and plenty of natural sources for key nutrients. They do not use any corn, wheat, or soy ingredient and their products are free from artificial additives.
In addition to making some general promises regarding the quality of their products, their website also provides some specific promises about the quality and safety of their products. They understand that pets are family and that pet owners like you want to know that the products they feed their dogs are going to meet his nutritional needs in a safe and healthy way. This brand develops all of their recipes using extensive research and their production facilities are SQF-certified which is one of the most globally recognized food safety programs worldwide. Furthermore, they pass a that all of their recipes are formulated and produced in the United States in company-owned facilities following a kitchen-crafted concept that guides the process from start to finish. If you aren’t satisfied with the quality of your pet food product, you can fall back on the company’s 100% Guaranteed Satisfaction Policy.
As many lofty promises are made on their website, the truth of these claims can only be revealed through a review of their products. Because they offer a fairly limited selection, it is easy to make this kind of review. A quick review of products reveals that their claim of using premium proteins and digestible carbohydrates is 100% true. Furthermore, they use wholesome fruits, vegetables, and other healthy ingredients to round out their products and to ensure nutritional completeness. When you feed your dog this brand of food, you are doing more than just meeting his basic needs for nutrition – you are nourishing his body with wholesome, nutrient-rich ingredients and setting him up for a long, healthy life.

Evolve Recalls 2024:
Sunshine Mills currently owns and operates four pet food manufacturing facilities where they product this brand of pet foods as well as other dry food brands. These facilities carry SQF certification at Level 3, the highest level of certification attainable. Having been founded the way back in 1960, it is somewhat surprising to see that they have only been involved in a single recall in FDA history. This is a testament to the quality of the brand, however, so it should be viewed as a good thing. Some of Sunshine Mills’ dog biscuits were also recalled at that time, but it did not seem to affect the name brand in specific. Here is a description of the only recall record for the Evolve brand:
- In March 2007, the FDA issued a recall for Evolve Kitten Formula dry food due to concerns of melamine contamination.

Evolve Reviews
When it comes to food, they offer a number of traditional dry food formulas as well as grain-free options and wet food. For traditional dry food products, Evolve offers four different options: Maintenance Formula with Chicken, Maintenance Formula with Lamb, Senior/Lite Formula, and Puppy Formula. All of these formulas are made with real meat as the first ingredient with supplementary protein sources like chicken meal, fish meal, and egg included as well. These recipes are completely free from corn, wheat, and soy ingredients and they are oven-baked which helps to preserve the natural nutrient content of the ingredients. Each of these formulas is supplemented with dried fermentation products which act as probiotics, helping to support your dog’s healthy digestion, as well as chelated minerals which are chemically bonded to protein molecules, making them easier for your dog’s body to absorb and digest.

Evolve Grain-Free Turkey, Garbanzo Bean & Pea Recipe Review:
According to their website, this Evolve Grain-Free Turkey, Garbanzo Bean & Pea Recipe is “a healthy and holistic super-premium food that is great for dogs with food sensitivities”. This recipe features premium proteins like turkey and chicken meal, plus grain-free carbohydrates like garbanzo beans, peas, and sweet potatoes to meet your dog’s need for dietary fiber. Simply put, this recipe is loaded with healthy and wholesome natural ingredients in a recipe that is designed to nurture your dog’s body from the inside out, meeting and exceeding his basic needs for nutrition. Quality nutrition like that offered by this recipe is the key to a long, healthy life for your dog.
The first two ingredients in this recipe are both quality proteins – turkey and chicken meal. Fresh meats are an excellent way to start out an ingredients list, but you do need to be aware that they contain up to 80% moisture by volume. This sometimes means that, once the product is cooked, the actual volume of protein this ingredient provides could be much less. Fortunately, chicken meal is the second ingredient. Meat meals have already been cooked down to a moisture level around 10% (as indicated by the guaranteed analysis) which means that they are already a highly concentrated source of protein. This recipe also contains supplementary protein in the form of fish meal. The garbanzo beans and pea flour may provide some plant protein as well, which is good but still less biologically valuable for your dog than animal-based proteins like meat.
After the two primary sources of protein come three digestible carbohydrates – whole ground garbanzo beans, pea flour, and sweet potatoes. Not only are the carbohydrates highly digestible, but they are naturally gluten-free and grain-free as well. They provide your dog with dietary fiber to help support and regulate his digestion while also providing some key nutrients. Supplementary carbohydrate sources that appear further down the list include potato starch, tapioca flour, dried cranberries, blueberries, and carrots. The berries and carrots do provide some dietary fiber but they are more beneficial as natural sources for key nutrients, including antioxidants which will boost your dog’s immune system and support his brain health. These natural nutrients are more biologically valuable than the synthetic vitamin supplements that are also listed.
The remaining ingredients on the list for this Grain-Free Turkey, Garbanzo Bean & Pea Recipe consist primarily of healthy fats, dried fermentation products, and mineral supplements. The fats included in this recipe are chicken fat, ground flaxseed, and flax oil. Chicken fat may not sound like a very appetizing ingredient to you but it is a highly concentrated source of energy for dogs and more biologically valuable than the plant based fats, ground flaxseed and flax oil. The ground flaxseed provides some dietary fiber but it is primarily included as a source of omega-3 fatty acids and is supplemented by the flax oil. Again, it would be better if these were animal fats but they do help to provide omega fatty acid balance. The dried fermentation products included in this recipe act as probiotics to support your dog’s digestion and the mineral supplements help to round out his nutrition. They would be better if they were chelated, but they are still valuable.
Overall, this Evolve Grain-Free Turkey, Garbanzo Bean & Pea Recipe has a guaranteed analysis as follows:
- Crude Protein (Min) – 25%
- Crude Fat (Min) – 15%
- Crude Fiber (Max) – 3%
- Moisture (Max) – 10%
- Calorie Content – 370 kcal/cup
Bottom Line:
Overall, this brand appears to offer good quality nutrition for dogs in all life stages. Although they do not offer the largest variety of products, they do have a nice selection for life stages recipes as well as grain-free formulas. All of this brand’s products seem to be made with fresh, high-quality ingredients such as premium meats, digestible carbohydrates, and healthy fats – they also include beneficial supplements like dried fermentation products and fresh fruits and vegetables for a boost of natural nutrition. This brand doesn’t use any corn, wheat, or soy ingredients in their products and their recipes are free from artificial additives as well. All in all, your dog would be lucky to receive any one of Evolve’s food products.
My Husky is allergic to potatoe, signs were ear infections easily, reddi g around the snout and nose and smelled like popcorn. I switched to evolve verrified no potatoe was used in the simply 6 formula and she is progressing very well all signs of allergies are almost gone. Was using a wharehouse brand yellow bag dog food and it contains potatoe far down the ingredients list. Love the food thank you she is my baby
do they sell evolve simply six pet food in the stores
I have used every dog food out there my dog has terrible allergies and skin sensitivity this is the only dog food that I bought that has helped a great deal no more scratching biting apparently the ingredients in this dog food is superb. I have a Yorkie and all she did was bite and scratch all day long all night she kept me up I was very upset over her condition. Thank you for producing this don’t food. ☺🐕
My dog is 16. He had terrible digestive trouble and I tried many grain free and natural foods; nothing worked. While watching a guide dog that only ate Evolve, Bailey began to eat it and had not had a bad day since. It truly is good food.
I have been feeding my dogs the grain free salmon for two years. I decided to let them try the lamb and rice and purchased a bag yesterday. It has a sickening, horrible odor and the dogs won’t touch it. Is it supposed to have this odor? The salmon has an odor but it can’t compare to this.
Re: the lamb and blueberry oven baked dog treats, why is garlic powder an ingredient when garlic is toxic for dogs?
I just purchased a bag of Senior/Lite formula dog food in NC which had some kind of contamination. The food pieces were white and contained a chemical smell, similar to paint. It was Lot number T02 packaged May 31, 2017. I returned it to the store and have contacted the company.
