Dry Cat Food Recipe Review: Earthborn Holistic Primitive Feline Dry Food Recipe
This Earthborn Holistic Primitive Feline Dry Food Recipe is formulated to meet the nutritional needs of both cats and kittens so you don’t have to worry about switching your kitten over to a new product once he reaches 12 months of age. This recipe is formulated with the knowledge that cats are true carnivores and that they crave meat-rich ingredients that deliver high-quality proteins and healthy fats. In addition to being loaded with healthy protein, this recipe includes a blend of fresh fruits and vegetables as well as grain-free carbohydrates to ensure nutritional balance. It is also 100% guaranteed for both taste and nutrition!
The first ingredient in this Earthborn Holistic Primitive Feline Dry Food Recipe is turkey meal and it is followed by chicken meal and pea protein. Both turkey meal and chicken meal are excellent ingredients because they offer a highly concentrated source of quality animal protein. Whereas fresh meats contain up to 80% moisture by volume, meat meals have already been cooked to remove moisture – this means that their volume won’t change significantly when the product is cooked. While both of these ingredients are valuable additions, it is somewhat troubling to see pea protein listed third because it is a plant-based protein. If this ingredient appeared further down the list it would be safe to assume that it isn’t used in any significant quantity but, being third in line leads you to question just how much of the 44% crude protein content in this recipe comes from plant proteins.
After the three proteins that appear at the top of the list comes chicken fat. While this may not sound like an appetizing ingredient to you, it is actually extremely valuable for your cat as a concentrated source of energy. Supplementary fats can be found in the fish meals that appear later in the list and in the ground flaxseed and canola oil. Plant-based fats like these are less biologically valuable than animal-based fats but they do help to balance out the omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acid content of the recipe. A balance of omega fatty acids is very important for cats because, in addition to supporting his immune system, it also promotes healthy skin and coat. After a few weeks on this diet, your cat’s coat will be smoother and shinier than ever.
The remaining ingredients included in this Earthborn Holistic Primitive Feline Dry Food Recipe consist primarily of carbohydrates, fresh fruits and vegetables, and supplements. Peas and potatoes are the primary sources of gluten-free, grain-free carbohydrates in this recipe and they are also considered highly digestible for cats. Supplementary sources of dietary fiber in this recipe include fresh fruits and vegetables like sweet potatoes, blueberries, apples, carrots, and spinach – these ingredients also act as natural sources for key nutrients. Blueberries and cranberries are loaded with healthy antioxidants which help to promote oxidative balance and apples are rich in phytonutrients which can help protect your cat against disease.
The synthetic supplements used in this recipe help to ensure nutritional balance and to fill in the gaps left by the other ingredients. It is a good thing to see that several of the mineral supplements are chelated and that dried fermentation products are also included. Chelated minerals are mineral supplements that have been chemically bound to protein molecules, making them easier for your cat’s body to digest and absorb. Dried fermentation products act as probiotics to support your cat’s healthy and regular digestion. The pea fiber that appears after the supplementary proteins used in this recipe acts as a prebiotic as well, helping to support the growth of healthy bacteria in your cat’s digestive system.

Earthborn Holistic Dry Cat Food Recipe Rating: 4.5/5 stars
Overall, this Earthborn Holistic Primitive Feline Dry Food Recipe receives a 4.5 out of 5 star rating. The biggest benefit this recipe provides is the 44% protein content which comes primarily from turkey meal and chicken meal. The one downside to this recipe is the fact that it contains pea protein – it is also difficult to tell how much of the total protein content for this recipe comes from the pea protein. Not only is this recipe rich in quality proteins, but it also provides a balance of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids from healthy sources and all of the carbohydrates used are highly digestible. This recipe also includes beneficial additives like fresh fruits and vegetables as well as chelated minerals and probiotics.
Wet Cat Food Recipe Review: Earthborn Holistic Monterey Medley Canned Food
This Earthborn Holistic Monterey Medley Canned Food recipe is made with skipjack tuna and grilled mackerel, cooked in a flavorful gravy. Being both gluten-free and grain-free means that this recipe is unlikely to trigger food allergies and sensitivities, especially since the primary proteins are novel proteins for many cats. This recipe is rich in omega fatty acids to support your cat’s healthy skin and coat, plus it relies on nutrient-rich potatoes as the primary source of digestible carbohydrates. All in all, this Earthborn Holistic Monterey Medley Canned Food recipe offers excellent nutritional value and plenty of natural flavor.
The first ingredient in this Earthborn Holistic Monterey Medley Canned Food is fish broth and it is followed by skipjack tuna and mackerel. The fact that fish broth is listed before the protein ingredients in this recipe is not a problem – it is actually quite common in canned cat food products. Both skipjack tuna and mackerel are quality sources of animal protein which is very important for cats. Cats are obligate carnivores which means that they have a very limited ability to digest plant materials – the majority of their nutrition must come from animal-based ingredients like fish. These ingredients are also complete proteins which means that they contain all of the essential amino acids your cat’s body cannot synthesize on its own.
After the protein ingredients comes the main source of carbohydrate used in this Earthborn Holistic Monterey Medley Canned Food – potatoes. Not only are potatoes naturally gluten-free and grain-free, but they are also considered highly digestible carbohydrates for cats. This ingredient provides your cat with energy as well as dietary fiber to support his digestive system. Potatoes also contain essential vitamins and minerals that work with the synthetic supplements to ensure complete and balanced nutrition. In terms of fat, this recipe relies on sunflower oil as the main source, though the two proteins also provide some fat. It is a little troubling to see that a plant-based fat is the primary source used in this recipe, though it is not an inherently dangerous ingredient for cats.
This Earthborn Holistic Monterey Medley recipe has a guaranteed analysis as follows:
- Crude Protein (Min) – 12%
- Crude Fat (Min) – 2%
- Crude Fiber (Max) – 1.5%
- Moisture (Max) – 82%
- Taurine (Min) – 0.05%
- Calorie Content – 120 per 5.5-ounce can
This recipe is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by AAFCO Cat Food Nutrient Profiles for growth and maintenance. To feed your cat this recipe, offer adult cats two to three 3-ounce cans per 4.5 pounds of bodyweight per day, ideally dividing it into two meals. Growing kittens may require up to twice this amount and pregnant or lactating female cats may need two to four times this amount. For adult cats, follow the feeding recommendations for several weeks while keeping an eye on your cat’s bodyweight and condition. If your cat appears to be gaining an unhealthy amount of weight, you may need to scale back his daily portion a little bit. For cats that lose weight or become lethargic, consider increasing the daily portion. This product should be fed at room temperature and any uneaten portion should be refrigerated.
Earthborn Holistic Canned Cat Food Recipe Rating: 4/5 stars
Overall, this Earthborn Holistic Monterey Medley Canned Food receives a 4 out of 5 star rating. Made with skipjack tuna and mackerel as the primary protein sources, this recipe delivers plenty of lean protein as well as healthy fats and natural flavor. In fact, this recipe is 100% guaranteed for both taste and nutrition according to the Earthborn Holistic website. When you convert the guaranteed analysis to dry matter basis, you will find that the value for protein is very high and the value for fat is well within the recommended range. Where this Earthborn Holistic Monterey Medley Canned Food recipe falls short is in the use of a plant-based fat as the primary source – it would be better to see an animal-based fat listed, even if it were supplementary to the sunflower oil. This recipe earns points for the use of chelated minerals, though it could benefit from the addition of fresh fruits and vegetables to provide more natural sources for key nutrients. All in all, however, this recipe offers quality nutrition.
Final Thoughts
Overall, the Earthborn Holistic brand of cat food offers excellent nutritional value and high quality. This brand follows a holistic approach to pet nutrition so you can rest assured that whatever recipe you choose, it will provide your cat with all of the healthy nutrients he needs and nothing he doesn’t. Not only are Earthborn Holistic products made with fresh, wholesome ingredients, but they are incredibly rich in protein and fat, plus they are supplemented with chelated minerals for maximum nutrient absorption and dried fermentation products for probiotic support. Simply put, you can feel good about feeding your cat any one of Earthborn Holistic’s products.
I just spoke with an Earthborn rep on the phone. She said Earthborn
Holistic Chicken Catcciatori wet cat food is made in Taiwan, not the US.
According to the can label it is distributed by a company in Evansville, IN.

Thank you, may have to research that. I was just about to buy some Earthborn wet, but not that flavor, as my cat prefers seafood flavors. I will keep your comment in mind and not buy that flavor. Again, thank you.
About the Taste of the Wild on the Right sidebar, I would not buy that, it is made by the Diamond company, who has been involved in many numerous recalls. I would not trust any of it’s foods..
Let’s be clear, this cat food (wet) is DISTRIBUTED by Midwestern Pet Foods. The stuff inside the can, product of Thailand. MPF claims their dry foods are made in the USA.
I own 5cats and and I am having problems I don’t know what kind of food is good for them. Used to feed them Hils Science diet and now I bought Rachel ray and they are throwing up , I also bought Organix and Earth born Holistic but they are throwing up . So I don’t know if I should go back to Hills Science diet or stay with. Earth borne . I have one Siamese Manx , and . one Manx diluted calico. And 3 stray. Can you please help me . Thank you my name is Yoli.
I feed my kitties earthborn canned and dry food. The canned food states plainly on the label product of Thailand. How can it be made in human grade facility in the USA if it’s from Thailand?
Old thread, but figured never too late to chime in on pet food information. Often times when it says places like Thailand on food such as Earthborn, it is because it is where they source their tuna and they have facilities in those countries that exclusively make their product or process the meat. Thailand actually meets the quality standards of the standards of the USDA.
We just bought our first bag of this 3 days ago. We were feeding blue buffalo. Instead of mixing, we put earthborn in its own bowl with the blue next to it. My foster kitties ignored the blue and still are. We switched due to diarrhea and vomiting from blue. The kitties love earthborn and we are glad they happy. I also like that its family owned, all natural, and every 13th bag is free. 5 stars so far from the sutton family.
I live with 5 cats, two of whom have been diagnosed as having a “sensitive stomach”. At first, I was feeding them Hills “sensitive” dry and (one can split between all 5 cats) Hills or Royal Canin “sensitive stomach” wet food. None of them liked the Hills dry or the Hills or Royal Canin “sensitive” wet food. I switched to Blue Buffalo dry “sensitive” food & they all liked that better than the Hills dry food. And, I have been trying grain free canned foods (a couple bogs recommended grain free wet food for cats with sensitive digestion.) They absolutely LOVE the Earthborn canned food, especially the seafood based ones. And, neither of the cats with digestive issues has had problems with Earthborn canned food. My question is whether the Earthborn dry cat food would be appropriate for cats who have been diagnosed with sensitive stomach.
