Has Pro Plan Dog Food or Treats Been Recalled in 2024:
Purina products are produced and manufactured by the Nestle-Purina company which is one of the largest pet food manufacturers in the world. Nestle-Purina has manufacturing facilities all over the country as well as several plants oversees. The brand does not provide specific information about where their products are manufactured (except to say that it is in the U.S.) or where their ingredients are sourced – they only make general claims about sourcing their ingredients from regional vendors and about employing numerous quality assurance measures for their manufacturing processes, but there is no brand-specific information. The Purina company as a whole has been subject to a number of recalls over the years but the brand, being fairly new, has only one recall in its history:

Is this brand of Food Good for my Dog?
Just because their products have only been recalled once in recent years doesn’t necessarily mean that it is a quality brand. In order to determine whether this is a good brand for your dog, you need to consider the quality of the ingredients used, the safety of the brand’s manufacturing facilities, and the nutritional balance of their products. Purina provides some general information on their website about sourcing their ingredients from regional sources and about employing quality assurance measures, but there are no specific details for any of their brands – this can be considered a red flag. A quick review of numerous products reveals the use of some quality proteins like chicken and chicken meal, but there are also some questionable ingredients like unnamed animal fats, pea starch and dried beet pulp. Overall, the brand seems to offer mid-range quality – you could do better for your dog, but it is not the worst of Purina’s brands.
Dry Food: The brand offers thirty-eight different recipes for dry food. These recipes are divided into five different nutritional platforms with various life stage-specific options. There are products that cater to puppies as well as adult dogs, and even small-breed and large-breed dogs have their own unique formulas. dry food products are made with quality proteins as the number-1 ingredient and supplemented with whole-grain carbohydrates and, in some cases, grain-free carbohydrates to meet your dog’s need for dietary fiber. Individual Recipe Review: Naturals Lamb & Egg Recipe Dry
This Natural Lamb & Egg Recipe dry food formula is part of the Natural nutritional platform and it features fresh, natural ingredients in an easily digestible formula. This recipe features real lamb as the first ingredient and it is made with alternative sources for carbohydrates – no gluten, grains, or soy. This recipe offers a blend of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids to help nourish your dog’s skin and coat, plus it is supplemented with antioxidants for a strong immune system. This recipe is formulated for adult dogs one year and older.
As promised, the first ingredient in this Natural Lamb & Egg Recipe dry food formula is lamb and it is followed by chicken meal. Fresh lamb is a high-quality ingredient and an excellent source of animal protein. You should be aware that fresh meats like lamb contain up to 80% moisture by volume. So, when Purina cooks the product, the volume of protein provided by the lamb could become much lower. While this might be a problem if fresh lamb were the only source of protein in this formula, the fact that chicken meal is listed second is a good thing. Meat meals like chicken meal have already been cooked to remove moisture which makes them a highly concentrated source of animal protein. Supplementary protein sources in this recipe include dried egg product and brewers dried yeast. The quality of both of these ingredients is difficult to judge and may raise a red flag for some consumers.
After the proteins come the carbohydrates – pea starch and cassava root flour. Both of these are gluten- and grain-free carbohydrates so they are unlikely to trigger food allergies or sensitivities in your dog. Additional carbohydrate sources include dried beet pulp and pea fiber. It is difficult to say how much nutritional value any of these ingredients really contribute – they are most likely used as sources for dietary fiber. The crude fiber content of this recipe is 7.5 which is fairly high – it would be better to see a value lower than 5%. The remaining ingredients in this Natural Lamb & Egg Recipe dry food formula consist primarily of fats and supplements. Animal fat is the main source of fat which could be a problem because it is an unnamed source – the quality of this product cannot be determined. Fish oil is another unnamed source. The saving grace of this recipe is the inclusion of chelated minerals – minerals that have been chemically bound to protein molecules which makes them easier for your dog’s body to digest and absorb.
Overall, this Natural Lamb & Egg Recipe dry food formula has a guaranteed analysis as follows:
- Crude Protein (Min) – 26%
- Crude Fat (Min) – 16%
- Crude Fiber (Max) – 7.5%
- Moisture (Max) – 12%
- Zinc (Min) – 200 mg/kg
- Vitamin E (Min) – 460 IU/kg
- Calcium (Min) – 1.0%
- Phosphorus (Min) – 0.8%
- Omega-6 Fatty Acids (Min) – 1.2%
- Omega-3 Fatty Acids (Min) – 0.4%
- Calorie Content – 444 kcal/cup
Bottom Line:
Overall, the Purina Pro Plan brand is one of Purina’s better product lines. Made with natural ingredients and divided into five nutritional platforms, they offer customers a variety of options to choose from in creating a custom diet for their dog. While the website states that their products are manufactured in the United States, no details are given as to the exact location and there are few details about exactly where their ingredients come from. This is not necessarily a bad thing, however, and a review of several products reveals the use of quality ingredients like fresh lamb, chicken meal and chelated minerals. There are, however, some questionable ingredients as well – things like pea starch and dried beet pulp which offer limited nutritional value and unnamed fat sources. All in all, however, this appears to be an affordable and above-average product, though you could do better.
I have had labs for over 20 years and have always feed them pro plan of some kind. I have been very disappointed in the bright mind bags I have bought . The bag is full of worms and moths. When I took the 3 past bags back to petco, they offered me a replacement bag with no questioning at all. When I got to the counter with my new bag, I asked was this a common thing, they commented all purine products are like that. This is really surprising as I was under the impression this was the dog food of all dog food. No telling how many worms I’ve feed to my dogs. I will be switching tomorrow
When you find worms, that means that the dog food was not rotated in the store. And it’s old. Always check the dates on everything you buy. I used to work for a dog food company.
