Great Life Dog Food Reviews, Coupons and Recalls 2024
Quick Guide
The Great Life Performance Pet Product company was founded in 1996 by Elliot Harvey who saw a need for a high-quality pet food product backed by sound nutritional research. This company follows a holistic approach to pet nutrition, utilizing the highest quality ingredients available and following the strictest standards for quality and safety. Because these products are designed through a combination of quality ingredients and years of pet nutrition experience, each and every one offers superior quality nutrition that will nourish your dog’s body from the inside out. They may not offer the largest selection of products, but those they do offer are made with quality ingredients and formulated to meet your dog’s nutritional needs while also satisfying his cravings for natural flavor.
According to their website, this brand uses “freeze dried raw protein with balanced freeze dried organic raw greens, organic freeze dried fruits and vegetables, organic mixed baby sprouts and pre and probiotics”. Furthermore, their kibbles are coated with wild salmon oil to help ensure the health and condition of your dog’s skin and coat. When your dog eats this food, he will be receiving all of the nutrients he needs to achieve a long and healthy life, plus he will love the natural flavor. Many of this brands products offer the nutritional benefits of a raw food diet without all of the mess and expense. Simply put, this food is an “all-in-one healthy food, prepared and ready to serve”. Just open the package, pour it into your dog’s bowl, and you are ready to go!
When it comes to the ingredients used in their products, their website states that they use “the best available natural and organic ingredients from the U.S.”. Not only are their ingredients sourced in the United States, but many of them are certified organic and everything is thoroughly tested prior to shipment to the brand’s California-based production facility. They source their proteins from small farmers around the country and all proteins are tested for hormones, antibiotics, and diseases before being used. These practices are in keeping with the company’s motto which is, “quality is #1 for all of our pet products”. This brand puts a great deal of thought into the development and processing of their products to ensure premium quality nutrition for your dog.
Great Life Recalls 2024:
Their brand website does not provide a great deal of information about their products but they do state that their products are thoroughly tested and made with the finest ingredients available. Many of their products are made with certified organic ingredients as well as healthy supplements including probiotics for healthy digestion. Furthermore, their unique manufacturing process enables you to give your dog the benefit of raw nutrition with the convenience of kibble. With all of the work they put into the manufacturing and testing of their products, it should come as no surprise to you that this brand has not been affected by many recalls. In fact, there is only one recall in this brands history:
- In May 2013, the Great Life company voluntarily recalled certain batches of Great Life Grain Free Buffalo food because some batches of the product were not reaching their full expiration date.

Is Great Life a Good Food to Feed my Dog?
Because they only offer one formula of dry food and three canned food options, it is fairly easy to evaluate the quality of the brand as a whole. When you visit their brand website you will notice that it is very simple but do not let that throw you off. If you visit the “About Us” page you will learn about the company’s unique manufacturing process which involves the use of freeze-dried raw and organic ingredients and a coating process for the cooked kibbles which enhances their omega fatty acid content. While this brand does not offer the largest selection of products, those that are available seem to be of high quality. They also provide a great deal of information about the sourcing of their ingredients and the rigorous testing processes they follow to ensure the quality and safety of their products. Overall, they seem to be a good quality pet food brand.

Individual Recipe Review: Great Life Grain and Potato Free Buffalo Recipe
This Grain and Potato Free Buffalo Recipe Food is one of three dry food options that they have to offer. All of their dry foods are grouped under the same name and they follow a very similar formula – the difference between them comes from the type of protein around which the recipe is based. This particular recipe is focused around buffalo, both fresh buffalo and freeze-dried buffalo. Their website markets this product as gluten-free and non-GMO, plus it is highly digestible and great for dogs that suffer from food allergies or sensitivities.
If you review the ingredients list for this product you will note that buffalo is indeed the first ingredient. Listing fresh meat as the primary ingredient is a good thing for dry food, though there is one thing you need to be wary of – fresh meats contain up to 80% moisture by volume. This simply means that when the food is processed and cooked, much of that moisture is removed and the actual volume of protein provided by the buffalo meat could be much less. You should also note, however, that freeze-dried buffalo is the fourth ingredient – because it is freeze-dried, most of the moisture has already been removed so the volume of this ingredient won’t change significantly. There is also freeze-dried buffalo liver on the list which adds more protein plus fats and healthy nutrients.
True to its promise of being grain-free and potato-free, the main carbohydrates in this Grain and Potato Free Buffalo Recipe Food are tapioca and jicama. There are also a variety of freeze-dried fruits and vegetables included in this recipe such as pumpkin, squash, parsley, papaya, kale sprouts, broccoli sprouts, and barley sprouts. For fresh fruits and vegetables there are yams, blueberries, cranberries, parsley, and artichoke. All of these ingredients work together to meet your dog’s needs for dietary fiber and they also provide natural sources for key nutrients. Most dry foods include synthetic vitamin and mineral supplements (including this recipe) to help ensure nutritional balance, but natural sources are always more biologically valuable for your dog. Again, freeze-drying these ingredients removes moisture but preserves the nutritional integrity of the raw ingredient.
Aside from the proteins and carbohydrates included in this Grain and Potato Free Buffalo Recipe Food, there are also several sources of healthy fats. Your dog gets some fat from the freeze-dried buffalo liver and the chia seed, but the main source of fats in this recipe is the wild salmon oil. Their kibble foods are coated with wild salmon oil which helps to provide a balance of omega fatty acids while also supporting the health of your dog’s skin and coat. The remaining ingredients in this recipe consist of nutritional supplements, extracts, and dried fermentation products. The mineral supplements are chelated – this means that they have been bonded to protein molecules which makes them easier for your dog’s body to digest and absorb. The dried fermentation products serve as probiotics to support your dog’s healthy digestion.
Bottom Line:
Overall, this brand appears to be a high-quality food brand, though it doesn’t offer as much variety as other brands. With just one dry food formula (and three flavors) to choose from, your options are very limited and you may not even be able to find their products at your local pet store. Their website talks a lot about the quality of their ingredients and the standards to which they hold themselves in manufacturing safety, but the website is still very simple and doesn’t provide important information like the guaranteed analysis for their products. Based on the ingredients list alone, this food appears to offer quality nutrition, though the values for crude protein, fat, and fiber cannot be determined.
Is Great Life no longer producing food? My boutique is not able to get any and said there will be no longer carrying it and I tried to go to the site and it says there is an error. I can’t seem to find any info about what is happening but I am so upset as both my Yorkie and Pit LOVE this food and it has done wonders for them!
