People have been eating honey for thousands of years. It’s truly a natural food, coming straight from bees. Dogs often enjoy honey, too. Perhaps not as much as bears like Winnie the Pooh, but many dogs like it.
Is Honey Good or Bad for Dogs?
Honey is perfectly fine for dogs to eat. It’s not something that you would want to give your dog in large amounts, but it often makes a good substitute for processed sugars in recipes for dog cookies or treats. Some people like to put some honey on a piece of toast or a dog cookie to give to their dogs. Other people add a little honey to their dog’s meals.
Are there any health benefits?
Yes, honey has a lot of health benefits. It’s mostly made up of simple sugars, so it gets in your dog’s bloodstream quickly. This can be good for a dog that has problems with low glycemia. It also contains lots of vitamins such as vitamin A, vitamin B complex, vitamins C, D, E, and K. And it contains lots of minerals such as calcium and others. Honey as been used medicinally since the time of the ancient Egyptians and Greeks. It’s been prescribed for things like diarrhea, colds and coughs, ulcers, and for people recovering from injuries. It’s also been used to treats cuts and wounds since it is an antibacterial. Honey stored in Egyptian tombs for several thousand years has been opened and still found to be free of bacteria. (We’re not sure how it tastes after so long.) Some people give their dogs local raw honey to help with seasonal inhalant allergies. Bees make the honey from the same plants that often trigger the allergies in the dog, so by eating the honey, the dog may adjust to the pollens. It works for some people and their dogs.
