The adorable face of the Beagle combined with its calm friendly demeanor and reasonably small size has made it a highly popular breed with dog owners for many years now. They’re an inquisitive kind of dog that’s known to suffer from coat issues that need to be properly managed – which makes using the best shampoo for Beagles (or at least one that’s appropriate for the breed) quite important.

With that in mind, today we’re going to provide you with arguably the most detailed, and accurate guide to grooming and bathing a Beagle on the entire internet. We’re going to cover everything from things you should be looking out for in a good Beagle shampoo, through to grooming tips and frequently asked questions.

We’re going to end this article with an in-depth (and completely impartial) product review section in which we will talk about what we think are the best shampoos on the market for Beagles right now (that cater to the specific needs of the breed) without breaking the bank.

Grab a drink and get comfy, because this is going to be a long one…

Let’s get started.

Popular Types Of Beagle Shampoos

Let’s start off this article by looking at a few things that you should be looking out for in any good Beagle shampoo.

Deshedding

Beagles are a breed that shed moderately, and as such, shampoos that have anti shedding properties are beneficial for them. They have a thick double coat that consists of a thicker insulating undercoat and a lighter top coat. These two coats are very densely packed together and the Beagle is considered to be a breed that has one of the thickest coats of any kind of dog on the planet.

Due to the thickness of the coat, when hair falls out of your pooch it can sometimes get trapped in the rest of the hairs that are still healthy and attached to your dog’s body. If it wasn’t for this thickness trapping the hair that falls out the Beagle would probably be considered a high shedding breed.

A de-shedding shampoo isn’t going to eliminate all your shedding problems, they’re useful – but they’re not a cure. However, if you pick a quality shampoo that comes highly recommended (like the products we’re going to talk about later) you’re going to notice the difference.

2 in 1 Conditioner

Most good dog shampoos come with some form of conditioner these days, and for Beagle owners, they should be on the very top of your feature shortlist. The gorgeous glossy coat of the Beagle is probably one of the main things that attracted you to the breed in the first place – and it needs a little help staying in tip-top condition.

Look for products that contain essential oils and natural conditioners designed to keep your pooch looking great in-between bathing sessions. Skincare infusions are also useful (like Aloe Vera) because looking after your dog’s skin has been shown to result in lower amounts of shedding.

2 Tips On Maintaining The Perfect Beagle Coat

In this section, we are going to give you 2 simple tips that we think you need to pay serious attention to when it comes to maintaining the iconic coat of the Beagle.

Keep On Top Of The Grooming

The Beagle is a reasonably low maintenance breed – providing you have an adequate grooming routine. Despite the thick nature of their coat, because they’re a short haired breed (and they’re a reasonably small dog) grooming shouldn’t take more than 5 minutes once you’ve gotten the hang of it.

The caveat to this is that you need to keep on top of your grooming duties. If you leave it too long between grooming sessions, you’re going to have your work cut out for you when you next break out the brushes.

Start Grooming Them From A Young Age

Grooming is going to be a regular part of your life as a Beagle owner, so anything that makes grooming sessions a little bit easier is something you should be paying close attention to. Ensuring that your beagle enjoys being groomed (or at the very least, tolerates it) is something you should be striving towards from a very young age.

Within a few days of getting your pooch home for the first time, you should break out the brush and get them used to the sensation of being groomed. You should do this daily when they are young – even if your pooch doesn’t need to be groomed. While grooming is important, doing it regularly at a young age is more about training them to accept the fact that grooming is a part of their life instead of you delivering the benefits that a good grooming routine provides.

You should provide treats at a young age to encourage good grooming behavior. Start by giving treats for them simply sitting still, then when they’ve accepted that, you can move on to handing out treats when you groom around the ears, paws, and muzzle.

Overall Best Dog Shampoo for Beagles

Refreshing Rosemary & Mint Dog Shampoo & Conditioner by Buddy Wash

At this point in the article you know about the thick coat of the Beagle and the issues it can cause, and you know about the 2 main things you should be looking out for in any good Beagle shampoo.

It’s now time for us to start making some specific product recommendations. We’re dog geeks here, and we enjoyed spending countless hours pouring over the specifications of almost every dog shampoo on the market to find products that we are comfortable recommending for Beagles.

Before we get into the reviews, we quickly want to point out that we’re a totally impartial site with no particular affiliation to any brand of shampoo. These are our genuine recommendations.

We found quite a few great shampoos for Beagles that we wanted to recommend today, there are some runners up later in the article that are well worth checking out, but we had to choose a winner…

It was a tight contest between our overall recommendation and the runner up we’re going to talk about in a moment, but in our opinion, we think that right now the best Beagle shampoo on the market is the Refreshing Rosemary & Mint Dog Shampoo & Conditioner by Buddy Wash.

You might not have heard about Buddy Wash, but to us in the pet industry – they’re legends. They’re a brand that has earned the respect of the industry (and dog owners) over the years they’ve been operating. Their products are natural, powerful, and most importantly – they’re very competitively priced.

As the name suggests, this is a 2 in 1 product that conditions and cleans at the same time. The cleaning power of this shampoo is excellent and is a coconut-based formula that is entirely soap and alcohol-free (so it’s not going to dry out or harm your Beagle’s skin). It creates a lovely thick lather reasonably easily, which is very useful for Beagle owners – as it will allow you to cover every single hair in their famously thick coat.

The conditioning power of this product is exceptional, and we’re really happy with the performance it provides. There’s a perfectly balanced blend of natural oils, vitamins, and other extracts (including sage, rosemary, and chamomile) that nourish and enhance your dog’s coat. It’ll reduce shedding at the same time as ensuring your dog retains the stunning glossy shine that the breed is famous for.

This product not only conditions your dog’s fur, it also does its best to promote healthy skin too. There’s a nice amount of aloe vera in the formula, which as you probably already know is one of the best things on the planet in terms of skin nourishment. The addition of tea tree oil is something we’re really happy to see in the product when combined with the aloe vera it provides a heavy hitting combination that’s going to leave your pooch with the best skin on the block.

There’s a lovely infusion of rosemary and mint in this product that’s a nice little addition. These two scents are well known for being relaxants, and any bath time anxiety your pooch might be feeling will be reduced significantly by the aromatherapy style benefits they provide (they’ll leave your pooch smelling great too).

As you’d expect from a brand with this kind of reputation, this is a product that’s made from the highest quality ingredients – and it’s made in the USA too. It hasn’t been tested on animals, it’s safe for human hands (don’t wash yourself with it), and at around $8 for a 16oz bottle – it’s great value for money too.

4-Legger’s Organic, Hypo-Allergenic, Lemongrass & Aloe Dog Shampoo

Runner Up –  4-Legger’s Organic, Hypo-Allergenic, Lemongrass & Aloe Dog Shampoo was very nearly our overall recommendation, the only factor we didn’t like about it was the price – which is why it ended up as our runner up. To be honest, even though it’s more or less double the price of the Buddy Wash shampoo above, it’s still not going to break the bank.

It’s a soap-free, alcohol-free, chemical-free formula that provides exceptional cleaning power by using the power of lemongrass. Lemongrass is a natural compound that has antibacterial and antifungal properties that’ll ensure any bacteria on your pooch get eradicated easily. The formula is super concentrated, and it has been specifically designed to lather well (which is one of the biggest problems that non-soap based shampoos have to deal with). As an added bonus, lemongrass has some mild natural pest repellent properties and this is a product that has been specifically designed to be compatible with most topical flea and tick treatments on the market.

This is a 2 in 1 shampoo and conditioner combo, and there’s an expertly crafted blend of essential oils in the product that is designed to strengthen and heal your dog’s coat (which will, in turn, reduce shedding). Like the Buddy Wash product above, there’s a nice amount of aloe vera in the formula that will soothe and heal skin – but there’s no tea tree oil, so it’s perhaps a little less effective.

This is arguably the most natural product on the market, 4-Legger pride themselves on making some of the most wholesome, cruelty-free, gentle (yet effective) products. It’s not tested on animals, it’s made in the USA, and it has been officially certified by the USDA as a product that is “Organic to exceptional standards”.

As mentioned earlier, it’s more expensive than the Buddy Wash product, but it’s an excellent shampoo at a very fair price point. Sometimes getting a little extra quality is worth paying for, and if the reasonably small additional cost is something you can afford – you’ll be able to see where the extra money went.

Nature’s Miracle Supreme Odor Control Natural Puppy Shampoo & Conditioner

Best Beagle Puppy Shampoo – We talked earlier about the importance of getting your Beagle into a regular grooming routine from a very young age. In a similar fashion, it’s equally important to get your pooch accustomed to bathing rituals from the very start too. If they’re not comfortable, or happy in the bath – it’s going to cause unpleasantness for you and your pooch once every two to three weeks for the rest of their lifetimes.

With that in mind, we think that the best Beagle puppy shampoo on the market right now is the Supreme Odor Control Natural Puppy Shampoo & Conditioner by Nature’s Miracle.

The main thing we like about this product is that it’s a tear-free formula, which means that even if it gets in your dog’s eyes – it’s not going to cause them any discomfort. This is super important for the first few bathing sessions, because once they associate bathing with pain – it’s very hard for them to unlearn that memory.

It’s a super gentle formula that has been specifically designed for the softer gentler skin of a puppy, and as it’s properly PH balanced, it’s not going to cause any redness or dryness. We love the addition of the fresh spring scent that has been infused into the formula.

It has therapeutic and calming properties that are kind of similar to the ones we talked about in our overall recommendation – they’re just a little less effective. This is almost certainly because the manufacturer is reasonably limited by the ingredients they can use in a tearless shampoo, and while it’s not the best kind of aromatherapy in the world – it’s certainly a nice added bonus.

At only around $5 for a 16oz bottle, it’s one of the cheapest products we’re recommending today, and if you’ve got a young Beagle at home (or on the way), we suggest you pick a bottle of this stuff up and give it a go.

3 More Top Rated Dog Shampoos For Beagles

To conclude this review section, we’re going to talk a little bit about 3 other great shampoos for Beagles that we looked at during our research that we thought were good alternative picks to our overall recommendations. They’re all excellent products, and despite them not quite making it to the top spots – we are confident you’ll be happy with the performance and value for money that they provide.

Earthbath Shed Control Green Tea & Awapuhi Dog & Cat Shampoo

This anti shedding shampoo is one of the best on the market right now, and if you’ve got a beagle that seems to be shedding excessively, it’s a great option. Earthbath is one of the best in the business when it comes to all-natural high-quality shampoos, it’s hard to match their dedication to creating ethical, natural, and powerful products.

It’s a soap-free formula that cleans and sanitizes your dog exceptionally well, but it’s the conditioner here that’s most interesting to us. What enables this product to minimize shedding by noticeable amounts is the various infusions that work harmoniously with one another. The ingredient list is as long as it is impressive (and remember, it’s all natural), inside the bottle, you’ll find aloe vera, tea tree oil, shea butter, green tea extract, omega 6 fatty acids, and many more natural conditioners.

It’s not the cheapest product in the world at $13 for a 16oz bottle, but it’s still good value for money, and most importantly, it’s a product that provides almost unbeatable performance in the deshedding department.

FURminator DeShedding Ultra Premium Shampoo For Dogs

If you liked the sound of the product above but were not too happy about the price tag – then this great deshedding shampoo from FURminator is probably a product you should add to your shortlist. It’s a natural product that uses a soap-free formula, but it still manages to provide efficient and effective cleaning capabilities despite this. Some of the infusions that make up the conditioner in this product are similar to that of the Earthbath product above, but obviously, the ingredient list isn’t as impressive (due to the price point).

To be quite honest, this shampoo is not as good as the product from Earthbath above, the cleaning power is a little weaker, and the deshedding capabilities of the product are not as comprehensive. However, when you’re paying around $4 for a bottle of the same size (16oz) it’s hard to find a reason complain.

Paws & Pals Oatmeal, Shea Butter & Aloe Vera Shampoo

The final product we’re going to be talking about today is an all-natural product from Paws & Pals that provides a well-rounded shampoo and conditioner at a great price point. It’s soap and alcohol-free, instead, the product gets its cleaning power from oatmeal – one of nature’s best natural deodorizers. The shea butter and aloe vera work well together to nourish your dog’s skin, and the essential oils in the conditioner are great for the health and appearance of their coat.

It’s around $12 for 20 oz bottle of this product, which makes it much better value for money compared to some of the other products we have talked about today. If you’re looking for a great product that’s going to give you the best bang for your buck, you could do a lot worse than putting this excellent product from Paws & Pals on your pooch.

4 Tips On Bathing Your Beagle

In this section, we are going to take a look at a few tips that we consider to be essential reading for any current or prospective Beagle owner. Just a few simple changes to the way you bathe your Beagle can make life happier and healthier for both you and your pooch.

Apply Generous Amounts Of Shampoo

As we have talked about several times in this article, the Beagle has two coats instead of one. This has a variety of benefits that makes them a durable hardy breed, but it can also be a little bit of a pain when it comes to bathing.

Because the coat is so dense and thick it requires a little bit more effort than normal to properly coat their coat with shampoo. You’ll almost certainly need to use more product than recommended on the bottle if you want to get good coverage – but don’t go crazy here. Ensure that you get a nice soapy lather going and that no hair is left unturned. This will clean both coats, and destroy any odor creating bacteria and oils that live in the lower of the two coat – leaving you with a super clean, super fresh Beagle.

Rinse Well

Once you’ve applied a healthy amount of soap to your pooch, it’s super important that you remember to remove all of it too. The thick coat of the Beagle again causes problems here because it has a tendency to hold on to soap a little bit more vigorously than breeds with a lower coat density.

We recommend giving Beagles two rinses instead of one. Give them a very good going over with the water from top to bottom, and then once you’re done, go over them again. This ensures that every last drop of shampoo has been removed, which is something you want to be 100% sure of. Dog shampoo is designed to be totally removed after application, and any remaining soap can cause skin irritation or redness that will be uncomfortable for your dog and may lead to itching (which in turn can potentially lead to infection).

Bathe Your Beagle In The Sink

The small size of the beagle means that they are a breed that is much better suited to being bathed in the sink instead of in the bathtub. When you place a dog the size of a Beagle in the tub, it effectively becomes a huge scary prison for them. They’re surrounded by a super slippery surface on all sides, and they instinctively know that they are trapped.

Imagine how you’d feel if you were placed in a bathtub that’s twice your height that’s being filled with running water? We’re willing to bet you’d be a little stressed – even if you understood the situation you were in (which your pooch probably doesn’t).

Bathing your beagle in the sink takes away all of this stress instantly. They feel much more relaxed and the experience is much less claustrophobic for them. Bathing your Beagle this way is also much easier for you – as you’re not going to be bent over and crouching down for 20 minutes while you get the job done.

It’s important to remember that you shouldn’t bathe your pooch in any sink that has a curved bottom (like most bathroom sinks). The curved sides combined with the slippery surface of the ceramic or metal makes it difficult, and potentially dangerous for your pooch to stand in. Kitchen sinks usually work much better (as they often have a flat bottom which is much easier for your pooch to stand on), so get into the habit of bathing them there instead.

Run The Bath Ahead Of Time

Beagles are known for being an adventurous, and reasonably brave breed – it’s one of their defining (and most admirable) characteristics. However, you might be a little surprised to learn that Beagles can suffer from anxiety in certain situations. Separation anxiety is reasonably common, but arguably the most anxious time in a Beagle’s life (apart from visiting the V.E.T) is bath time.

This isn’t true of all beagles, and some of them have no issues with getting all wet and soapy in the tub – but for the ones that do get a little bit anxious around bath time, there are a few things you can do to make things go a little smoother.

Running the bath ahead of time is the easiest way to reduce your Beagle’s stress levels. Like most things in life, the anxiety felt in anticipation of something is much worse than the actual event itself. If you call your pooch in and start running the water, they’re going to have to sit and wait for the water to fill the tub (or preferably the sink) as they get stressed because they know what’s coming next.

If you prepare the bath ahead of time you can simply call your pooch in, immediately pick them up, and like ripping off a band-aid, you can get the job done with minimal anticipation anxiety for your pooch.

FAQ Regarding Bathing a Beagle

My Puppy Beagle Doesn’t Like Being Groomed? What Can I Do?

This is a common problem with young puppies of many breeds, including the Beagle. As we mentioned earlier in the article, it’s very important to get your Beagle used to being groomed from a young age – but sometimes that’s easier said than done.

Instead of grooming with a brush, try simply grooming your puppy with your hand instead. This is going to do almost nothing in terms of grooming benefits, but it’ll get your pup used to the idea of staying still and getting brushed by something. Provide them with treats as the process continues to ensure they associate your grooming ritual with positive thoughts.

Over time your pup should enjoy the hand grooming sessions (because of the treats you’re giving them). Once they’re comfortable, start a grooming session with your hand, give them a treat, and immediately switch to the brush and see how they react. By repeating this process over the course of a few days or weeks you should be able to stop doing the hand “grooming” and only use the brush.

How Often Should I Bathe A Beagle?

The thick coat of the Beagle has been mentioned several times in this article, and it’s responsible for more than a few headaches for us human owners. Because their coat is so thick, it traps the loose hairs that have fallen out, but it also allows huge deposits of natural oils to build up too.

These natural oils are essential for the health of your Beagle, and they’re the best conditioner on the planet for the maintenance of their coat. However, over time these oils build up and become smelly. Because the thick hardy coat of the Beagle is resistant to muckiness, beagles can look almost spotless on the top layer of hair – but underneath things are grimy and smelly.

Due to this, you should bathe your Beagle once every two to three weeks. If your bathing schedule is less frequent than this, you’re going to have a pooch that starts to spread that horrible “dog smell” around your home liberally (which you’re not going to notice straight away, but your visitors will).

Conclusion

So there you have it, that’s about all there is to know about how to bathe and groom a Beagle. Our adorable little bundles of joy are reasonably low maintenance critters, but you can make an already easy job even easier if you pick a shampoo that’s well suited to the breed.

Any of the products we have talked about above today are going to be a great choice, they all meet needs of the Beagle, and they’re all quality products we’re confident enough to stake our reputation on by recommending.

We highly recommend you add them to your shortlist.
